If you have had recent issues with receiving a "directory not found" error on a New 3DS system, please re-download the latest version of the setup kit. The issue has been fixed.
To play any games made for prototype firmware, you'll need to set up an EmuNAND.
Requirements:
* A modded 3DS
* An SD/microSD card of at least 6 GB that is ready for formatting
* The latest version of Luma3DS
* The latest version of GodMode9
!!!! WARNING: This setup process will format your SD/microSD card, ERASING everything present on it. We recommend only using this with a blank card to prevent data loss. !!!!
!! NOTICE: If you have a prototype EmuNAND from before the v2.0 update (which released October 25, 2025), please clear your SD card and start these steps again to get the latest prototype EmuNAND. !!
1. Download the latest version of Luma3DS and extract it to your blank/ready-to-format SD card.
2. Download the latest version of GodMode9 and put the "GodMode9.firm" file on your SD card inside the /luma/payloads/ folder. Create the "luma" and "payloads" folders if they don't already exist.
3. Insert the SD card into your system and hold Start + Power to open GodMode9.
4. Home Button -> More... -> SD format menu
5. When prompted to select a NAND size, select "RedNAND size (min)".
6. Set cluster size to auto when prompted.
7. Name the card anything or leave it as the default.
8. When prompted, select the "RedNAND" type.
9. If prompted to clone SysNAND after formatting is complete, press B to select No.
10. Press R + Start to power off the system.
11. Insert the SD card into a computer. If prompted to format the SD card, ignore it.
12. Re-copy the latest versions of Luma3DS and GodMode9 to the SD card. Remember, "GodMode9.firm" should go inside the /luma/payloads/ folder.
13. Copy the contents of the EmuNAND Setup Kit to the root of the SD card.
14. Hold Start + Power again to open GodMode9.
15. Home Button -> Lua scripts -> EmuNAND_Setup
16. Follow the prompts on the bottom screen and, when prompted, press A to exit. From here, you can install more titles using the Proto_Title_Manager Lua script (Home Button -> Lua scripts -> Proto_Title_Manager), or press Start to reboot into the prototype firmware.
Upon reboot, the system will load into the v243 prototype firmware. The following titles can be launched:

The following titles can be installed only on the v238 firmware:
- 3D Challenge / Face Ace - Debug Build (July 12, 2010)
- Pilotwings Resort - Debug Build (July 16, 2010)
To run these two titles, boot into GodMode9 and use the Firmware_Manager script to switch to the v238 firmware, then open the Proto Title Manager and install the title(s) you want. Then, reboot to open the devmenu. To reinstall the v243 firmware, boot into GodMode9 and run the Firmware_Manager script again.
Please be aware that the v238 firmware is not available for New 3DS / New 3DS XL / New 2DS XL units.
To power off the system, hold the power button for about 10 seconds to force it to shut down.
To return to SysNAND, simply format or swap the SD card.
Known issues with this EmuNAND:
* Using the v238 firmware, the circle pad may not work correctly. To fix this, switch to v243 using the Firmware Manager, then install the Config app using the Proto Title Manager. Once you run it, you can use it to re-calibrate the circle pad, and then switch back to v238 to make use of the more accurate circle pad controls.
* Sometimes, a title might randomly boot to a completely black screen. This is a temporary issue that can be fixed by simply rebooting the system and starting the app again.
* Gyro may not work on some 2DS units
* 3D does not work on New 3DS and New 3DS XL. This is unfortunately not fixable.
* Using the v243 firmware, gyro is too sensitive on 2DS and later.
* Some titles, such as Target Shooting and Camera Demo, have display issues on New 2DS XL systems.
* The v238 firmware does not work on New 3DS / New 3DS XL / New 2DS XL at the time of writing, so our Firmware Manager doesn't install it for these models. This is likely fixable, but requires in-depth debugging that is not possible at this time.
